Lucy FATO ’84 Named Sara Frazer Ellis Award Winner
The 2024 Sara Frazer Ellis Award will be presented during Reunion Weekend to Lucy FATO ’84. The award is presented annually to an Ellis alumna whose achievements embody the School’s mission and what it means to be an Ellisian.
Lucy is Executive Vice President, General Counsel & Corporate Secretary of Seaport Entertainment Group, a newly standalone public company listed on the New York Stock Exchange following a spin-off transaction by its former parent company, Howard Hughes Holdings. In her previous roles with global insurance company AIG, she served as Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Global Head of Communications & Government Affairs beginning in 2017, and then as Vice Chair of AIG in 2023 and 2024.
Prior to AIG, Lucy was Head of the Americas and General Counsel of Nardello & Co., a global private investigative firm, where she remains a member of the Advisory Board. In 2014 and 2015, Lucy was General Counsel of McGraw-Hill Financial (now known as S&P Global) and for nine years prior to that she was Deputy General Counsel & Corporate Secretary at Marsh McLennan. Lucy began her legal career at the law firm Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP where she spent 14 years as a capital markets lawyer, including five as a Partner in the Corporate Department. Lucy also serves on the Advisory Board of the Harvard Law School Center on the Legal Profession and on the Board of Trustees of the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation.
Throughout her career, Lucy has worked to enhance corporate philanthropy efforts within her organizations—including at AIG, where she helped to expand an already robust Pro Bono Program. During her tenure, the program provided free legal services to individuals and partners with non-profit organizations, helping those most in need and people in marginalized communities, including veterans, immigrants, at-risk women and children, and the LGBTQ+ community.
She has also sought opportunities to support women, and values the time she spends in mentorship. She regularly organizes networking dinners where she and other women general counsels empower the next generation of women attorneys to advance their careers. By creating spaces to actively foster mentorship and support, she leads the way for ambitious young women to succeed in their own careers.
Lucy is part of a legacy of Ellis women; her sister, Annamaria FATO ’79, attended Ellis. While her other sister Michelina “Miki” Fato did not attend Ellis, Miki’s daughter, Lucia S. SNYDERMAN ’19, was an Ellis lifer and her stepdaughter Molly SNYDERMAN ’07 was also an Ellis lifer. During Reunion Weekend, Annamaria and Lucy will participate in a panel discussion featuring Ellis sisters. With this award, Lucy will inspire future generations of Ellis women just as she inspires women she connects with and supports in her professional work.
